4-H is ...
...the youth development program of the USDA Federal Extension System which delivers education and research programs to communities through Land Grant universities and local county governments.
4-H programs differ from state to state, from county to county and from community to community. Check with your county Cooperative Extension Office for programs in your area.
Many 4-H programs emphasize non-formal educational experiences for young people led by community volunteers. A common image of 4-H is young people raising animals. This is one of the ways the 4-H program develops skills, but there are many other types of projects for youth from all type of communities.
Some 4-H programs are operated in formal school classrooms, in school age child care programs and in cooperation with other community agencies.
In 4-H there is an emphasis on developing leadership, community service and life skills that will enable young people to become productive members of their community.
